POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a serious road crash on the A78 at the Hunterston Powerstation Roundabout early this morning.

Around 5.50am officers received a report of a red Vauxhall Corsa having collided with a lamp post.

Emergency services attended and the 46-year-old female driver of the car was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment to extensive burns.

She was later transferred to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary where staff describe her condition as critical.

Sergeant Ian Thornton from the Divisional Road Policing Unit based at Irvine said:“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances of the incident however I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area around the time and may have seen a red Vauxhall Corsa on the road.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at the Divisional Road Policing Unit based at Irvine on 101.”
