RESIDENTS in part of an Ardrossan Street have had their bins collected for the first time in over a month.

And now those from 42-52 Elm Park in the town are hoping it isn't just a one off.

A concerned resident from the street contacted the Herald on Friday, June 9, after becoming increasingly frustrated at their refuse collection dilemma.

They told of how their bins were "not getting lifted every other week".

It was claimed that this was due to a waste collection driver being unable to reverse up the narrow street.

The matter has caused issues in the past, with the lorry having to use the grass verge to get along the street - which the resident calimed had "destroyed it".

It is understood that has caused issues as the grass verge can no longer be cut "because the bin lorry has done so much damage".

They added that the street was "full of kids" who could no longer play on this grassed area.

It was also alleged that the driver had also told them he could not use the street's turning point as "a car was parked in it".

All of these issues came to a head over the past month - which led to some bins not being emptied for over five weeks.

The resident told the Herald there had been "maggots and flies everywhere" and that the recent heat had amplified the issues.

"Nobody can use their bins now because they are full. People are just throwing their rubbish in the street now," they added.

They also noted that they had made their own attempts to solve the issue by gathering the bins "10 yards"  from the end of the street - though they were still not emptied.

They added that they had been told by the council on a number of occasions that a smaller vehicle, which could fit into the street, would come every other week so that all of their bins were being emptied on a consistent basis.

Though this had not come to fruition until Monday, June 12, after the Herald had been contacted and had approached North Ayrshire Council for comment.

Then on Tuesday, a North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We apologise for any inconvenience and can confirm that the bins were collected on Monday (June 12).

"We expect collections to be as scheduled moving forward.”

The skeptical Elm Park resident then told the Herald: "We can only hope the new schedule keeps up."
