I’d like to wish a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all readers.

Whilst this is a wonderful time for many, I know it can be difficult for many who are lonely, struggling financially or facing other challenges.

As the cost of living crisis has intensified and the gap between rich and poor widened, it’s important to reflect on what the Christmas story teaches us, whether we’re religious or not.

The number of homeless people we are seeing on our streets in cold weather this winter is a reminder we need to do more to provide warm shelter for all.

Thinking about the Christmas story, I also can’t help but think of the region in which it’s told.

As whole families perish under bombardment in the warzone of Gaza, we must all play our part in pushing the international community to call for a ceasefire and a political resolution.

Here in North Ayrshire, our communities have shown real compassion to refugees who have arrived over the past year.

Christmas is a time to show empathy to all, whether it’s around the world or those here finding it hard to make ends meet.

I’d like to give special thanks to those we rely on who work during the festive season in our public services, retail and hospitality sectors.

Whatever you’re doing, whether supporting others in need or spending well-deserved time off, I hope you have a happy and nourishing Christmas and that 2024 is a good year when it comes.
